I like the way Pokémon TCG Online does their onboarding: theme decks. Same idea as recipes but you can't change any of the cards. You can play the same ladder as other players but the pool of players you are up against are also using theme decks. Once you've advanced in your skills, you can copy the deck into their Standard format and make changes to it or build up from scratch. This likely wouldn't work for Hearthstone's current setup as PTCGO allows card and deck trading as well as the ability to purchase decks. While we'll likely lose some creativity, overall deck recipes will be great for new and returning players.
